Doig holds the Knight Chair in Journalism, specializing in computer-assisted reporting – the use of computers and social science techniques to help reporters do their jobs better – with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Doig's research interests include newsroom diversity, demographics, public opinion polling, crowd estimation and finding techniques used by other professions that can be developed into tools for journalists. Before joining ASU in 1996, he was associate editor/research of the Miami Herald. He received a BA from Dartmouth College and is a graduate of the Defense Information School, which trained him to be a combat correspondent for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
